What is a Dietitian?

By: Kara Marshall
Registered Dietitian

Dietitians are health professionals who are trained to provide evidence-based advice and counseling around food, nutrition, and health. Dietitians help people to make mindful food choices, meet health and performance goals, and translate nutrition science into practical recommendations.

Is there a difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no! A Registered Dietitian may also hold the title of Nutritionist; however, Nutritionists may not call themselves Dietitians. Dietitian is a protected title across Canada and is reserved for individuals who have completed a comprehensive education and training program and met competencies outlined by their regulatory college. Dietitians in BC are regulated by the BC College of Dietitians.

What conditions can a Dietitian help with?
Nutrition counselling makes a difference. A dietitian can help:
• Support sport performance
• Stabilize blood glucose
• Support injury recovery
• Reduce blood pressure and cholesterol
• Ensure nutritional adequacy for special diets (i.e. vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free)
• Control weight (gain/loss)
• Assist in the management of digestive disorders
• Manage food intolerances and allergies
• Navigate grocery stores
• Menu plan
